The Technology & Philosophy of the Site
Our philosophy in creating the site is that it will be visited for its contents rather than its appearance. The purpose of the contents is to convey information about us as a family, our hobbies and in particular Ed's interest in his family history and the genealogy of the ESSERYs.
None of us are great graphic designers, therefore we have chosen to keep the layout simple with little use of graphics. The site is therefore mainly textual - we will leave the challenge of creating great looking sites to others - the textual nature of the site should however make it quicker to browse.
In order to ease the maintenance load on the Family History pages we have used tools to automatically generate the pages from data already held. We maintain the family history and records of the ESSERYs in a package called Family Tree Maker (www.familytreemaker.com), output it in GEDCOM format (a standard genealogical file format), remove all living individuals with GEDClean and then convert it to HTML with GED2HTML (www.gendex.com/ged2html) or GED2WWW (www.netcom.com/~lhoward/ged2www.html)
Most of the Census data you see is maintained in Office 97 Word and Excel files and converted for the Web using the Save As... HTML feature. Some pages are hand touched using FrontPage Express. The main index pages have been created in FrontPage, either 1.1 or more recently Express. The site is hosted by Demon Internet and uploaded to them using CuteFTP.
Our machine is an Evesham Micros Platinum SE with 32MB memory, 3.2GB disk, Iomega IDE Zip Drive, Matrox Millenium graphics with an Iiyama MT9021T 21" screen and a Dataflex V34 modem.
